What we're All About
The members of San Antonio Forest are interested in leaving
something for future generations--a forest within our great county.
We all want to do our small part to plan, plant and nurture
a forest within our county. Why a forest within a county?
Well, before the county with it's sprawling cities was here, nature had developed
an ecosystem suited
for this part of south Texas. As the cities grew, more and more of the
ecosystem was distroyed. While we have built beautiful citites over
the centuries, our ecosystem has not been well cared for. San Antonio
Forest members plan to remedy that fact for future generations. Urban forestry
is gaining momentum throughout our nation as a positive effort for every
citizen.
We do not have all the knowledge, or funds, or energy, or ability to
do this by ourselves. That is why we will be working with the San Antonio
city arborist, the County Forestry Service and local educational institutions
to improve the habitat we call home.
This is a long range project--actually, one that will never end. Our goals are:
To establish a world-class forest within Bexar county
Establish a process through which the city and residents act as partners
to plan, plant and maintain our forest
Share our knowledge with other cities across the nation and around the world
Enhance our quality of life through nature
Increase the economic growth of Bexar county by creating an ecosystem of the future
While this may seem overly ambitious at first, it is not without a plan.
We expect to make the most use of our local resources to ensure decisions
made are the best possible. We also know it is wise to walk first--that is,
take a slow paced beginning and pick up the speed as our successes allow.
The county city governments play a major role in this endeavor. As the guiding
authority for all aspects of our communities, city councils, their staff, and the mayors
serve each resident--either one at a time, all at once, or somewhere
in between. Coordinating new codes governing the maintenance of our
forest is one of their responsibilities. Several cities have already
accepted this challenge with great success. We will
work with our elected officals to promote the idea of a forest and to
protect the forest today and tomorrow.
If you wish to join us, have an idea, or just want to pose a question,
"click" the mail icon below and drop us a note or here if
you wish to become a member. If you are able to
volunteer some of your time to this endeavor, please attend our
next meeting. We sure will be glad to meet and work with you.
Our dream is to someday relax under the shade of our very own forest
and tell all the tourists and our children's children how it all began.
