San Antonio Forest

Est. 1998

Conservation Notes

  • Plant trees native to Bexar county or with a good local success record

  • Plan your planting schedule between either October-November or February-April (allows roots to develop before the summer heat slows us all down)

  • Plant trees with enough room to grow--some trees are 60-100 feet tall and 40 feet wide

  • Look up before planting...watch for overhead lines and street lights

  • Consider the neighborhood first before making a tree selection. If it will be the first one of its type on the block, are you sure it will survive? Do some research.

  • Consider the fallout from the tree-leaves, fruit, nuts, berries. Are these desirable or will it cause you extra work?

  • Variety is the spice of life--consider several different types of trees to highlight their individual strong points. It will add interest to your landscape.

  • Trees which require large amounts of water are not San Antonio friendly. Consider your budget and our water supply.

  • Fast growing trees do not live as long as medium or slow growers. Consider this point before you plant. (Suggestion: a mix of growing rates will produce pleasing results.)

  • Know your soil before you plant. It makes a world of difference to some types of trees. Also, ammending the soil may make a "flower pot" of the hole and the tree will stay within the hole, eventually becoming rootbound (just like in a pot) and possibly dying.
